The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age is a turn-based strategy role-playing game, released by Electronic Arts in 2004, which became one of the most memorable games on the Game Boy Advance system.

Based on the epic story by J.R.R. Tolkien, the game offers a dramatic, emotional journey where players step into Middle-earth and accompany heroes on a mission to protect the world.

Storyline – Epic Adventure in Middle-earth

In The Third Age, players follow Berethor, a squire of Gondor, on his journey to find Boromir, a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. On his way to Rivendell, Berethor is attacked by the Nazgûl and saved by Idrial, an elf in the service of Galadriel. Along with new companions such as Elegost (a ranger), Hadhod (a dwarf), and others, Berethor gradually discovers the dark plots that threaten Middle-earth.

The plot weaves together prominent events in The Lord of the Rings such as the Battle of Helm’s Deep, the Battle of Osgiliath, and the confrontation with the Balrog at Khazad-dûm. The game climaxes with the battle against the Eye of Sauron at the peak of Barad-dûr, where the fate of Middle-earth is decided.

Combat System – The Pinnacle of Strategy

The game uses a turn-based combat system, similar to classic Japanese RPGs like Final Fantasy X. Players control a team of six characters, using special skills and tactics to overcome enemies in intense battles.

The combat system includes:

  • Unique Skills: Each character has their own set of skills, from elf magic to dwarf physical strength.
  • Character Upgrade: Level up and unlock new skills with experience earned from battles and quests.
  • Resource Management: Make wise use of items and magic to deal with tough challenges.

Characters and Relationships

The Third Age is not only a story about wars but also about the characters’ journeys through personal challenges:

  • Berethor, a squire of Gondor haunted by a cowardly past, finds courage and redemption.
  • Idrial, a wise elf, serves as a guide and symbol of hope.
  • Morwen, a brave woman of Rohan, carries a touching story of family loss.

The relationships between characters are deeply built, from trust to friendship and love, creating emotional depth for the game.

Evaluation and Success

Although not expanded or innovated more than the film version due to copyright restrictions, The Third Age still received many compliments for its faithful storyline, engaging combat system, and authentic Middle-earth atmosphere.

The combat system was inspired by classic RPG titles, creating a familiar yet fresh feeling that gamers loved. The game achieved success during the 2004 holiday season, making an impression on fans of The Lord of the Rings.
